Superintendent’s Welcome – 2013-2014
The 2013-2014 school year begins with two major milestones for Kaohsiung American School: we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary and will be breaking ground this fall to begin construction on our new campus facilities. We will build our academic buildings and theater, demolish our current building, and complete the project by adding a new sports facility (including an indoor swimming pool) and athletic fields. The entire project is expected to take 2 years and can be followed on the KAS website.
This construction project will bring new meaning to our definition of “Learning Campus”. As the students and staff observe the construction of the new campus, they will learn the science and math necessary to complete such a major task, study the history of KAS, and write articles about this project. It will certainly enhance and strengthen our curricula, as KAS becomes a true “Learning Campus” for the next two years.
With the completion of our staffing for this year, we were impressed with the quality and high number of teaching applicants, and we are pleased with our new additions to the KAS family. The quality of teaching at KAS is exceptional! In our science and English departments, for examples, each has three staff members with MA Degrees and the fourth with a Ph.D. About three quarters of our staff have earned their MA Degree, and all teachers are highly qualified, experienced, and educated in their academic area. In brief, students matriculating at KAS are receiving a very high level of instruction each and every day.
The true pride of our School is the student body. It all begins with our recently graduated Class of 2013. College placements were excellent for the fifth year in a row. From UC Berkeley (multiple acceptances) in the western USA to Bowdoin and Emory in the Northeast and Southeast, to Washington University in Middle America, graduates earned their way into many top US and Canadian Colleges and Universities as well as excellent schools in England, Taiwan, and several other countries. In addition, many earned very generous scholarships to these schools. We are very proud of all of our graduates, and the Class of 2013 continued this tradition of most graduates being accepted to their colleges of choice.
As we look at this new senior class, we see another fantastic group with a near guarantee of success in their college acceptances. Five in this Class have earned PSAT recognition and move on in the National Merit Scholarship Program (we will keep you posted on their final placements). We know the seniors will lead our students in a positive direction by being the wonderful role models that they have been throughout their time at KAS.
Our student applications continue to increase with a waiting list growing each year. Many classes were closed in late spring or during the summer. As a result of this increase, we have become very selective in acceptances. We are at capacity for the second year in a row and look forward to our new campus that will allow us to accept 800 students and decrease the yearly waiting list.
With a committed School Board, supportive parents, dedicated staff, and respectful, hard-working students, everything is in place for this year to be the best in the brief but successful history of Kaohsiung American School. We look forward to the 2013-2014 school year with excitement, confidence, and very high expectations for students and staff alike. We wish every member of the KAS family a year filled with happiness and a positive educational experience each and every day.
